Kenya Airways (KQ) and Ethiopian Airlines are set to intensify their battle for the lucrative East and West African skies, opening new destinations and increasing frequencies in a fresh attempt to wrestle passengers from dominant European and Middle East carriers — and from each other. KQ plans to open new routes to traditional Ethiopian destinations of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and Luanda in Angola in addition to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Juba in Southern Sudan.Both carriers have a similar strategy of ferrying passengers from West and Central Africa into their respective hubs — Nairobi for KQ and Addis Ababa for Ethiopian Airlines — from where they connect mostly to Southern Africa, the Middle East, India and the Far East. On October 25 last year, Ethiopian Airlines hacked into the KQ network, simultaneously mounting new flights to the two lucrative KQ destinations of Mombasa and Monrovia (Liberia). An Ethiopian Airlines passenger jet which made an emergency landing in Chad due to a radar problem took off again Friday, but 120 of its 150 passengers refused to board, airport authorities said. The plane, a Boeing 737 en route from Dakar in Senegal to Addis Ababa via Bamako in Mali, "left this morning at 5:00 am (0400 GMT)," said an airport official, as well as airport police. The incident comes days after another Ethiopian Airlines 737 with 90 people on board crashed into the Mediterranean minutes after takeoff from Beirut during a raging thunderstorm on Monday. There were no survivors.Of the 150 passengers on the African flight, "120 refused to leave on the Boeing," an airport official said. "They have been put up in different hotels. South Africa's kulula operated by Comair Limited, is expanding its fleet to include eight state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800s. Despite tough economic times and the difficulties of competing against state-subsidised competitors such as South African Airways, kulula has continued its run of success enabling it to substantially grow its fleet from a single aircraft in 2001 to 8 aircraft in 2010. The new aircraft will help to cater for the high passenger volumes over summer, as well as assist in keeping ticket costs manageable during the World Cup. The first of the kulula Boeing 737-800s will take to the skies this month and the rest will be phased in during 2010. The new planes are amongst the most efficient aircraft currently available, making them cheaper to operate and since they use less fuel kinder to the environment than older planes.Kulula first took to the skies in August 2001 as South Africa's first low fare airline,pioneering a new way of flying making it affordable for anyone to fly. kulula comes from the Zulu word meaning "easily". Its fleet consists of two Boeing 737-200's (118 seats) and seven Boeing 737-400's (165 seats). Operates over 325 flights a week with 15 routes including three regional destinations.

The minister of transport recently published the tournament's transport regulations in the Government Gazette. However, industry leaders are concerned about the authorities' ability to process the applications in time. Those who provide public transport for a fee, as well as hotels and guest houses which transport guests with a minibus, midibus or bus - or will use three or more vehicles, are obliged to obtain a temporary licence.

Mozambique's national air carrier announced Tuesday that it will resume flights to Portugal, the first time in a decade that it has offered the service. Linhas Aereas de Mocambique (LAM) said in a press release that it would resume the flights "within the first semester of this year."
In a ceremony held on November 25, 2009 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, Ethiopian won the NEPAD Transport Infrastructure Excellence Awards 2009.
