The twelve board members of Elections Cameroon, ELECAM have taken oath of office in the presence of the president of the national assembly, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, Prime Minister Ephraim Inoni and a cross section of cabinet ministers, political party leaders, foreign diplomats and the civil society. ELECAM is the body mandated to organize and supervise elections in Cameroon. Swearing either to the bible or koran, they pledged to discharge their duties in all impartiality, neutrality and sincerity. Cameroon's Chief Justice Dipanda Mouelle of the Supreme Court presided over the oath taking ceremony in place of the constitutional council. <
This comes after the Supreme Court dismissed a motion to annul the presidential decree nominating Board Members of ELECAM.
The Social Democratic Front, one of Cameroon’s two hundred opposition parties filed a motion to the Supreme Court requesting the annulment of presidential decree no 2008/463 of December 30, 2009, which appointed members of Elections Cameroon.
The Social Democratic Front argued that some of the members appointed to ELECAM are incompatible with article 11 and 12 of the 26th November 2006 law creating ELECAM, mentioning Samuel Fonkam Azu’uh, Dorothy Limunga Njeuma and Cecile Bomba Nkolo, as all former members of the Central Committee and Political Bureau of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Party, CPDM.© The Entrepreneur Newspaper 2009.
