Going Back to School in Cameroon

The end of the year exams have come and gone; now is time to go back to school. How the exhilarating years pass in a twinkle of an eye, interspersed with exciting holidays. For sure, much time was spent during the holidays watching television. And so, in spite of our best efforts, the hidden "enemy" lurking in television sets got into the vulnerable children without their knowledge. Small wonder that most of them going back to school are likely to be like Socrates’ Athenian youths with "... bad manners, contempt for authority, disrespect for older people ..." and who "... no longer rise when their elders enter their room ... contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble their food and tyrannise their teachers..."

Obama embarks on 67-day sprint to election

Fresh off his historic nominating convention, Democrat Barack Obama is embarking on what likely will be the most important 67 days of his campaign for the White House. Republican John McCain is looking to upstage his rival with the announcement of his running mate. Obama leaves the convention city of Denver as the first black man to be nominated for president by a major political party. The 47-year-old Illinois senator won over the party faithful — even some die-hard backers of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton — but the broader electorate awaits. His first stop: the battleground states of the Midwest.

Obama's Speech 'Very Tough'

Barack Obama's acceptance speech tonight wasn't what people have come to expect from a Barack Obama speech. It wasn't filled with lofty rhetoric or grand cadences. It did not induce tears or euphoria. It didn't have the forced, kitschy call and response tropes - "and that's the change we need!" - that defaced nearly every other major speech at this convention. At 43 minutes, nailing his dismount at 10:53 pm, it wasn't even very long. It was lean, efficient, practical and very very tough. It was the perfect speech for a skeptical nation. In some ways, the heart of it was near the end, when Obama directly confronted a country that has lost faith in government - and an opposing party that preys on that cynicism:

Barack Obama has a dream, a dream embodied in a speech, a speech he gave at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night to introduce himself to America. Yes, introduce. Hard as it is to believe, most Americans are just getting to know him. And this is what they got to know Thursday night: He is a man who can master a moment.  He did a little inspiration, he did a little substance, he did a little attack, he did a little defense, he did a little everything except let his audience down. Even when it sounded like he was going to lapse into old and tired political rhetoric — he talked about the struggles of ordinary, hardworking Americans — he gave it a new twist and managed to blunt the attacks of his opponent to boot.

To Chairman Dean and my great friend Dick Durbin, and to all my fellow citizens of this great nation: With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States.

Let me express my thanks to the historic slate of candidates who accompanied me on this journey, and especially the one who traveled the farthest_ a champion for working Americans and an inspiration to my daughters and to yours — Hillary Rodham Clinton. To President Clinton, who last night made the case for change as only he can make it; to Ted Kennedy, who embodies the spirit of service; and to the next vice president of the United States, Joe Biden, I thank you. I am grateful to finish this journey with one of the finest statesmen of our time, a man at ease with everyone from world leaders to the conductors on the Amtrak train he still takes home every night.

Obama sketches promise of America

Barack Obama cast his presidential nomination as proof that no dreams are too high, savoring a historic moment for himself and the nation Thursday before setting out on a difficult struggle to break another barrier for a black American. Obama's success in obtaining the Democratic nomination was indeed a remarkable achievement, reached despite the misgivings of some Americans uncomfortable with electing the son of an African immigrant — not "the typical pedigree," as he put it. He used his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in part to allay those concerns, to show Americans that he is one of them — not born of wealth or privilege, his gains made of hard work and sacrifice. "This moment — this election — is our chance to keep, in the 21st Century, the American promise alive," Obama said. He put himself in the shadow of great leaders like John Kennedy, Franklin Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as his humble parents.

Could the Democrats be about to nominate the wrong Obama? Well, probably not. But Michelle Obama, Barack’s wife, gave an awfully good speech at the Democratic National Convention here Monday night. While Barack can sometimes soar off into the clouds, Michelle tends to keep things down to earth. “The Barack Obama I know today is the same man I fell in love with 19 years ago,” she said. “He’s the same man who drove me and our new baby daughter home from the hospital 10 years ago this summer, inching along at a snail’s pace, peering anxiously at us in the rearview mirror, feeling the whole weight of her future in his hands.”
