"""Why then did the U.S. invade Iraq? Why is occupying Iraq so "vital" to those "national security interests" of ours? None of this makes sense if you don't have the patience to drill a little beneath the surface – and into the past; if you don't take into account that, as former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz once put it, Iraq "floats on a sea of oil"; and if you don't consider the decades-long U.S. campaign to control, in some fashion, Middle East energy reservoirs. If not, then you can't understand the incredible tenaciousness with which George W. Bush and his top officials have pursued their Iraqi dreams or why -- now that those dreams are clearly so many nightmares -- even the Democrats can't give up the ghost......"""
The price of OPEC basket of twelve crudes stood at 90.27 US dollars a barrel on Tuesday, November 27, 2007, compared with $91.84 the previous day, according to OPEC Secretariat calculations. This steady increase comes despite the declaration of the Third Summit of Heads of State and Government of OPEC Member Countries, which was issued in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, 18 November 2007. Though OPEC's mission is to coordinate and unify the petroleum policies of Member Countries and ensure the stabilization of oil markets in order to secure an efficient, economic and regular supply of petroleum to consumers, a steady income to producers and a fair return on capital to those investing in the petroleum industry, the organisation achieves its mission of stable petroleum prices only after due pressure from major consumers. Some market analysts opine that variations in gasoline prices are not due to differences in crude prices, but to widely varying levels of taxation in the major consuming nations such as the USA.
Oil steadied at around $94 a barrel on Wednesday, November 28, 2007, as investors took stock of negative economic data in top fuel consumer the United States and bet on OPEC raising supplies. Mounting evidence that slowing U.S. growth has eroded fuel demand has slowed a rally that took oil to $99.29 last week. The prospect that OPEC would boost output at a meeting next week also added pressure.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Donald Kaberuka, has called on researchers, policy-makers, scientists and economists attending the African Economic Conference to challenge themselves within their organizations and research institutes to begin an intensified search for Africa ’s adaptive solutions, which will enable current economic progress to be sustainable over the long term. In an address during the conference in Addis Ababa , held from November 15-17, 2007, Mr. Kaberuka said Africa could realize its dream if it focused more on talent development rather than on its geology. A rich well-endowed sub-soil is clearly a major advantage, but it is simply not enough to give the continent the growth and prosperity it is striving for

The African Development Bank Group has released its 2007 African Development Report in Addis Ababa , Ethiopia . Released within the framework of the African Economic Conference taking place from November 15-17, the report highlights that increased interest in the continent’s resources is largely driven by global economic growth, especially in Asia , and related demand for fossil fuels and minerals. This situation, the report continues, raises questions on how the continent can best leverage its resources for its own development given the complexities and trade-offs. “The market demand for Africa’s natural resources is strong and growing, but Africa needs these resources too for its own development,” the report says.
