Mr Fowang Lawrence takes over from Mr Leku Francis Azeneku as Provincial Delegate for Agriculture and Rural Development for the Southwest province of Cameroon. Described as an old hand in the field, Mr. Fowang Lawrence is a qualified agricultural technician, who has worked for 11 years with SOWEDA, and previously with a Phytosanitary base in Kumba. The ceremony which took place on Friday, August 17, 2007 at the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture in Buea, has been described as a relay of batton between men with an agricultural vision for the people. Improving the quality and quantity of outout of the sector is their watchword, and their yardstick is improving the lives and working conditions of farmers in the region.
As they both shook hands in partnership, Mr Fowang commended the efforts of his predecessor, and expressed intentions of working towards the same values. He also promised to work hard on keeping the standards that have been set in the province and admitted to have been drilled properly on the current organisation of the delegation by Francis. Calling on the staff to work as a team, Fowang said he believes in the effort of all towards the success of the sector. In his words “I will like to call on all stakeholders and staff of the delegation to continue in their collaboration working as colleagues in increase the output of the sector”.
Mr Fowang, thanked the Minister of Agriculture, for the recognition given him to lead the agriculture sector in a province of the calibre of Southwest with enshrined agrarain foundations.
The Secretary General at the Southwest Governor’s office, Mr Ndode Mesape Bernard, took the opportunity to commend the efforts of the outgoing Delegate, and also welcomed the incoming provincial Delegate. Officiating at the ceremony, Mr Ndode assured the Southwest people on the competence of their newly appointed Delegate of aAriculture describing him as a field expert who has worked hard to improve the conditions in the sector.
The outgoing Delegate, who has been appointed as Director of Community Development at the Ministry of Agriculture in Yaounde, assessed the success of Cameroon’s agricultural sector as a prelude for enhanced development. Mr Leku explained that his interest amongst the stakeholders of the agricultural sector is attached to the farmers. “Farmers are the most-wretched stakeholders of the agricultural sector, but their contributions to the sector are definitely indispensable”, Leku probed. He cited the example of the Cocoa sector and the recently launched Cocoa season for the Southwest Province which recently took place in Kumba, bringing together all actors of the sector, and revealed producers, exporters, sales agents, and even officials, as being extensively richer than the farmers who toil on vast pieces of land to secure the harvest of the entire sector.
In this dimension, the incoming Delegate plans to work with farming groups to improve on community development programs. Mr Fowang looks forward to an exceptional adventure with agricultural professionals in the province.
