The National Advanced School of Public Works in Buea has graduated its 22nd batch of students. The graduation took place on Friday, March 16, 2007 at the school campus in the Southwest provincial headquarters. The professional school graduated 200 young engineers amidst cheers and jubilation from on-looking visitors, government officials, friends and family members.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony, His Excellency the Minister of Public Works Mr Messengue Awom Bernard, urged the graduating students to be initiators of jobs, self employment, and not to act as mere ‘job seekers’ He also announced that the Government has made available the sum of 43 million FCFA (US$ 86.000) for rehabilitation works on the infrastructure at that institution. Minister Messengue also reminded the graduating students and their trainers of the challenges they will face in the outside world, a place he said is different from what it seems to be. He however called on the graduates to be courageous and believe in their potential, saying that, the level of self-esteem they possess will determine to a great degree what they become in the future.
On his part, the Director of the National Advanced School of Public Works, Mr. Emmanuel Nkuncho congratulated the out-going students for their hard work and perseverance throughout their stay in the establishment. He called on the graduating men and women to be ambassadors of the School for the way they present themselves will paint a picture of what they have acquired and further reflect the training they received at School. He said in formal education, academics cannot be separated from social life.
A graduating student, Mr. Jonathan N. who was very delighted to have completed his training, expressed satisfaction on the skills and knowledge acquired. He said ‘I feel I am ready to face the world, and I am confident I will make it’. The National Advanced School of Public Works in Buea was created in 1974. It trains students from Cameroon and the central African sub-region on diverse sub-disciplines within the engineering corps.
